Car hire excess insurance providers

I have just carried out some research on line to see how many different organisations are now offering car hire excess insurance.
There appear to be 27 individual insurance providers with websites that I could find on the world wide web.
Out of these 12 were actually using quote and buy programmes from either Towergate Underwriting Group (insurance4carhire +) or questor.

There are now several specialists with Irish .ie web addresses, one in the USA, but found it difficult to find any based in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or other English speaking countries.

I also looked at van hire excess insurance sites and only found one and this is provider who is currently advertising on our specialist site http://www.insurance4vanrental.com/

All the insurance service providers have been listed with screen shots on a specialist page at http://www.insurance4carrental.com/Car_Hire_excess_services.htm

If anyone knows of other car hire excess or van hire excess insurance site, please can they contact me with a reply on this blog.

Insurance for Rental Cars

Came across this the other day, some interesting information here if you are thinking of hiring a car.

As a driver, driving your own car there are two main components of insurance that are typically regarded as essential and the same may be true for insurance for rental cars.

In the UK, Third Party cover is a compulsory form of insurance for car rental and by law it has to offer unlimited financial protection. The same is generally true for many parts of Europe too.
If you were to injure someone or damage their property in an accident with the hire car while having such having unlimited cover, then any award for damages against you would be covered by your third party insurance. There are no limits on what could be paid. What this means is that this level of cover is sufficient and you shouldn’t have to buy more.

In the USA and some other rental locations worldwide, you may find that there is no Third Party cover included at all and in these circumstances you may want to consider Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) to provide you with some insurance against potential claims for damages. It may be worth bearing in mind that without insurance for car rental of this kind you would be personally responsible for paying for any awards against you.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) covers damage to the car itself. Basic CDW cover is very often included as part of an all-in package by the car rental companies. (The USA and some other worldwide destinations are again exceptions to this.)

A problem with this is that typically the rental companies’ insurance will put an excess on the CDW and this is the amount that they may expect you to pay towards any repair damage. Excess amounts may vary but values between £500 and £1600 are common.

The other problem with standard CDW supplied by a car rental company is that certain parts of the car (the windscreen and windows, tyres, undercarriage and roof ) are typically excluded from cover. If any of these were damaged you would have to pay for the repair – in addition to any excess charges for dents or scratches to the paint work for example. This can be rather costly!

Naturally, many people may feel that this represents an unacceptable level of risk and expenditure for someone else’s car. Increasing your levels of insurance for car rental with some excess insurance may help keep risks down.

Excess insurance cover or Super CDW as it is sometimes known, is a policy against which you can make a claim should you be charged excess by the car rental company. There are a number of places where you can buy insurance of this type including the car hire company itself, but, you may well find that the policies of some of the Internet based independent insurance providers may be a lot cheaper than those of the car hire companies provide. In addition, their policies may also include those “excluded” parts of the car at no extra cost.

Take a look at some of the web sites and you will find a wide range of products for driving in the UK, Europe, the USA and elsewhere in the world. They can cater for groups of family or friends and if you are a regular renter you may find an annual policy to be of particular interest.
As with all insurance for car rental there are likely to be conditions attached so you may want to have a look at these to reassure yourself that you have the right cover for your needs.

Of course a lot of this will apply if you are hiring a van and on the same subject did you know that www.insurance4vanrental.com has now gone live in association with the www.insurance4carrental.com site?

Insurance for car hire passengers

I rented a car in France a couple of weeks ago and car hire company's margins are normally very tight so they have to try and sell any add ons.

Quite often you will be asked if you want to upgrade. Once I was asked if I would like to upgrade to a convertible Mini. Sounded interesting, however it was the middle of winter and there would not have been much sun about.

Normally they want to sell you you car hire excess insurance and as I rent several times a year have an annual car hire Europe Family and Partners from insurance4carhire.com (details at http://www.insurance4carhire.com/index.asp?linkfrom=4&curID=1&langID=1&refID=188 )

I normally say I don't want any excess insurance and my credit card details are taken and that is the end of the matter.

This time the representative asked me if I wanted insurance for my passengers. Thinking this was just another "add on" I declined.

I have since tried to find out if this is something new or what excactly it is? One proffesional replied "Personally, I’ve not come across this before, but it sounds more like a P.A cover, personal accident is usually covered on most travellers insurances policies so I’d be wary of taking out such policies."

If any one does know please can he / she reply on this blog?

insurance4vanrental.com added to car hire excess site

There a lot of people looking for van hire excess insurance, buying it direct from an independent provider can save them money.
At insurance4carrental.com, the advertising service for car hire excess insurance providers, we thought it would be beneficial to add a separate section for van hire excess insurance.
We have just set up http://www.insurance4vanrental.com/ . The site which is part of the original insurance4carrental.com site provides information on van hire and offers a space for indepenendant insurance providers like Insuremyvanhire.com to advertise their products.
Apart from arranging insurance through the dedicated entance link, you can also arrange van hire in the UK from holiday autos at http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xjeffreymilnerltd This means there is no excuse for not being able to go to IKEA or similar retail establishments over the Easter holidays.

insurance4carhire have new TV ad

We had a notification late last week that insurance4carhire.com had a new TV ad.

Their 'Happy Holidays' concept is designed to look at the positive side of taking out an insurance4carhire policy. This type of purchase is not always top-of-the-mind for the overseas traveller and so you can get caught out with high excess charges

I have not seen the ad yet and am interested to find out if anyone has and on which TV channels it is being shown on.

You can watch it via You Tube by following this link. http://www.insurance4carhire.com/index.asp?linkfrom=4&curID=1&langID=1&refID=188 Along the way you might even buy some car hire excess insurance if you are renting a car.

Remember car hire excess insurance for Easter break

19th March 2010 - The Easter holidays are only a couple of weeks away and the shops are full of Easter eggs. (In some shops they have been available since just after Christmas along with hot cross buns!).

Many people will be taking a break, a late ski break or searching for some spring weather that was starting to appear in the south of England the other day. You could be visting your holiday home or relatives in another country and renting a car when you get to your destination.

It is worthwhile booking in advance in case there are shortages again this year and holiday autos is well worth a visit at http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xjeffreymilnerltd

One way you can save money is to buy an annual car hire excess insurance policy. Did you know that when you rent a car, you will find that your car rental agreement normally includes cover for Collision Damage Waiver - CDW (damage to the rental vehicle) and Theft. There is almost always an excess on the Collision Damage Waiver and Theft.
You will need to take out insurance to protect this excess. If you are hiring a car several times a year this can certainly save paying a daily rate. insurance4carrental.com is and advertising service for car hire excess providers. Several companies advertise including
insurance4carhire.com, dailyexcess.com, Questor Insurance and insuremyvanhire.com for vans.

According to the Questor advertising page, "Cover the excess and much more when you hire a car. Save £'s from just £2.98 per day or annual from just £43.68 per year"
Insurance4carhire.com has a good policy for Family & Partners that covers 2 family members - Europe £79 the same company also covers older renters - with policies available for 75 - 85 year olds Europe 75-85 Cost: £ 65 Excess Worldwide 75-85 Cost: £ 75. This is very important as people want to rent cars as they are getting older and don't want to be restricted by their age.

For details of all those advertising go to http://www.insurance4carrental.com/index.htm

Get prepared for those Easter holidays now.

Hire Car Scam in Singapore

Comparecarhire.co.uk's "Travel News" has reported that a young Singaporean man was sentenced on the 11th March 2010 by a local district court to serve 42 months behind bars following investigations into an alleged car hire scam.

22-year-old Allen Tan Wei Loon pleaded guilty to eight charges, mainly involving cheating and fraud, and was also banned from driving for the next four years after it was discovered that he had been driving without any insurance cover or a driver’s license. The court heard how Loon cheated around S$134,000, the majority of which has already been repaid.

The scandal followed Loon’s response to an advertisement placed online by Ms Lim Lay Lan offering her car for rent. Loon then kept the $2,725 that Ms Lan had transferred into his account which was meant to cover insurance and road taxes.

One month later Loon used a similar trick to swindle a similar amount from another would-be renter, keeping the tax and insurance charges and reneging on promises to pay the owner, Mr Tan Keng Hwee, monthly rental fees.

Loon then proceeded to use the same deception on a number of other unsuspecting car owners, never paying a cent and frequently sub-letting vehicles out to a third party, who all paid him for the privilege. In one case, Loon had rented a Mazda RX8 belonging to Ms Ng See Wee to Mr Eric Ng Kian Seng, who reported the vehicle stolen after two months of driving. In fact, it had been retaken by the original owner who then tipped-off authorities to the scam.

Holiday Autos New Look Website

News Release from holiday autos:

holiday autos has launched a fresh new look and feel to its website this week. The site also includes improved functionality and many other new additions that aim to make booking with the world's leading car hire provider easier and faster.

As well as a new Route Planner functionality which has been added to appear at the top of all content pages, the new website also features:
- A new top menu element detailing "other rental" options
- A relocated search engine with double calendars to increase the booking speed and customer usability
- The option to select 'one-way rentals' by checking the "dropping off in a different location" check box
- Newsletter subscription is now back on the homepage.

holiday autos won two new awards in January - Best Car Hire in the UK for the second year running at the Globe Travel Awards and Best Leisure Car Hire at the Irish Travel Trade News Awards.

The brand refresh builds upon the unique look and brand standing Holiday Autos has built up over the last 23 years and retains many of these elements. The new design combines findings from customer usability testing, a fresh and contemporary look and delivers industry best practice into the design.

Stuart Nassos, Managing Director says "We are delighted to offer our customer improved functionality and believe our new look site builds on the site strengths and makes booking car hire a simpler process all round. We'll be rolling out more enhancements over the coming weeks to help deliver a high end booking process for all customers."

holiday autos are keen to make the booking process as easy as possible in 2010 to encourage customers to book early - this will be particularly important due to a limited supply of hire cars across the industry.

The new look website can be found at http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xjeffreymilnerltd

Holiday autos Spring car Hire Bargains

Just had this in from holiday autos. They are encouraging us to get out and about now the spring is on its way....hopefully!

They are offering car hire from £8 per day. If you find cheaper, they will match it. According to their website

"In the unlikely event that you find a cheaper car elsewhere in the UK, we will do our very best to match it.

Our price match guarantee allows you to contest a car rental price should you find it cheaper. You can contest a price right up until the start date of your rental period.

To take advantage of our price match guarantee you must compare the exact same car and the suppliers must be from the same country. You cannot compare prices for an airport pick up to a non-airport pickup.

Unfortunately our price match guarantee does not apply to promotional offers and is not valid on van hire or prestige cars."

They have compared some car hire costs with well know car hire providers in this flyer:

holiday autos Hertz Avis Alamo Europcar
Geneva £119 £278 £292 £173 £294
Malaga £53 £156 £160 £219 £115
Alicante £53 £134 £133 £184 £115
Faro £55 £92 £106 £219 £94
Heathrow £115 £136 £166 £126 £145

According to the flyer above, prices are based on a 7 day rental based on a Mini 2 door manual car without aircon picking up at airport locations on 22 March 2010. Please note prices are correct as at 22 Feb 2010 and are subject to availability and may change at short notice.

Looks like Faro in Portugal is exceptionally good value (although Alicante in Spain is slightly cheaper) and remember at jmlvillas.com we have over 144 self catering holiday holiday rentals to choose from at http://www.jmlvillas.com/country/Portugal , so why not take a Spring holiday in the sun?

To find out more about what holiday autos has on offer, or to make a booking follow this link http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w?ctryref=GBR&lang=EN&aff=xjeffreymilnerltd

EGroup Insurance and MY10 GAP

Just had a flyer in from egroup motor insurance group.

It says "Every day in the UK, more than 500 vehicles are involved in accidents and one is stolen every 2 minutes.

Write-offs occur all too often so have you ever considered protecting yourself and your money with Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) Insurance.

If you are comprehensively insured and any of your vehicles are less than 7 years of age then GAP Insurance will cover the value of the vehicle (or any outstanding finance) in the event of a total loss. It will payout the difference between the current market value of your vehicle and the value that your insurer will payout after depreciation.

If your vehicle has been purchased within the last 15 months we can offer a return to invoice policy."

How GAP works
- Cost of car = £12,000 (any value to £50k)

- The Vehicle is written off after 18 months

- Insurance company payout = £8,000

- GAP Insurance payout = £4,000

Premiums can be paid in full or monthly installments and start from just £115* for 3 years cover.

NB: also van, minibus and taxi up to £37,500 and bikes up to £25,000.

To celebrate the launch of the new 2010 registration plate, eGroup associated business and GAP Insurance speciliasts - Quota Marketing, are offering all eGroup customers an exclusive £20 discount.

Maybe it is an idea to take a look at egroup motor insurance products at http://www.jml-property-insurance.co.uk/e_group_insurance.htm

Strange how we wait till well into March for the "10" registration and then a few months later will get the 60. Still very confusing. Personally like the Irish system the year 10 the county and then numbers 10 D 12345 etc.

Car hire rental excess insurance and why it can be so beneficial

Buying rental car hire excess insurance from one of the Internet based independent car hire insurance suppliers may not only save you some money, but may also provide you with superior cover.

Car rental excess insurance is needed because typically the collision damage waiver (CDW) cover sold by the car hire companies tends to carry an excess.

This ‘excess’ represents the maximum amount of money that you could be expected to contribute to the repair costs of those parts of the car covered by the CDW. The exact figure will depend on the car and the car hire company but figures between £500 and £1600 are not uncommon.

If you add to this the amount that you may have to pay towards the repair costs of those parts of the car typically excluded from the CDW (the tyres, windows, undercarriage and even the roof, ) then you could be facing quite a rather large charge to your credit card.
For example, during your rental you swerve into a bush to avoid hitting a dog, damage one of the tyres which needs to be replaced and scrape the bodywork quite badly.

Car rental scenario:
You have an excess of £750. When you return the car you find that the paintwork will cost £500 to redo. Since this amount is less that the maximum excess, you are responsible for it all. You are also responsible for the total cost of the type replacement because your CDW doesn’t cover them at all.

You could reduce the risks of incurring expense of this nature by buying some excess insurance and your car hire company will typically be only too happy to sell you some.
The hire car excess insurance may prove to be expensive when compared to other options and there is no obligation to buy this type of cover from them - which is where the independent specialist providers of rental car insurance come in.

Take a look at the Internet sites of these car hire excess insurance specialists and you will find that they offer a wide range of rental car excess insurance products, which offer several features including cover for families and for senior citizens.

Additionally you may find that their excess insurance will also cover the excluded items at no extra cost. So the example quoted above for the replacement tyre would be covered as well.
Another feature of excess insurance bought from these specialists is that they can provide annual cover which is a great idea, rather like by annual travel insurance. This means that your policy is valid for a year, can be used for any number of rentals you choose.

You may only be able to rent one car at a time (up to a specified number of days at a time) and you may not be able to rent certain types of vehicle. (Motor homes, motorbikes, commercial vehicles, very high value cars, sport or vintage models may not be covered.)

If you are a regular renter, you may end up saving quite an amount of money, depending of your circumstances and what is more you don’t have to keep on arranging cover for every rental, just once a year.

This works quite simply. If you do have an accident, the car hire company may still charge any excess or charges relating to damage to ‘excluded’ car parts for which you are responsible, to your credit card. All you would have to do then would be to claim on your rental car excess insurance policy for reimbursement.

Car rental excess cover launched by Halo

The Insurance Daily has just reported that Halo Insurance Services has launched car rental excess insurance.

The underwriting agency, which is backed by Bridges Ventures and Magenta Partners, will focus on niche personal lines offerings for both wholesale and retail customers.

The firm has set out with a suite of car hire excess products available through brokers and affinity partners under the Halo Insurance brand, and online at iCarhireinsurance.com.

Prices start at £2.99 for daily policies, which according to Halo compares with up to £9.99 per day charged by some car rental companies. Annual cover is available from £39.99.

The products can be used with car rental agreements worldwide and cover extends to the roof, tyres, windows and undercarriage of hired vehicles.

A selection of add-ons are available, including personal accident, personal effects, vehicle rental cancellation, additional policyholder and vehicle key replacement.

Halo’s founder and chief executive officer, Ernesto Suarez, says: “Many people … end up spending a fortune at car rental desks, or find themselves with a huge excess bill at the end of the holiday after a small chip to their windscreen.”

He adds: “In fact, with many policies not covering the most vulnerable parts of the car, you could easily get hit with both!”

In January 2009, insurance4carrental.com launched a worldwide website advertising policies available from insurance4carhire.com and Questor

Insurance for Hire Cars

It may be very expensive if you have an accident in a hire car and you don’t have sufficient insurance, the costs to you could be seriously high so insurance for hire cars is critically important.

There are two main types of insurance that apply here. The first type of insurance is called third party liability. It basically means that the renter has to have insurance to cover any claims they may receive if he/she has injured a third party or damaged their property.

In the UK this insurance comes with hire cars and by law it must be unlimited to cope with any court awards however large they may be. In other countries the car rental company may cap the maximum payout level at an unrealistically low amount so you have to be cautious. If a court of law awards an amount higher than the liability cap, it will be you who will have to pay the difference.

The second type of insurance for hire cars is called CDW - Collision Damage Waiver and there is more information at http://www.insurance4carrental.com/Collision_Damage_Waiver_CDW.htm This gives protection against damage caused to the rented vehicle while the renter is responsible for it. This cover usually includes theft protection. Once again, if the person hiring the car does not have this in place and the car is damaged, it will be the renter who pays.

Car rental companies may include one or both types of this insurance in the rental price or they may invite you to purchase them separately, so you will need to look at this very carefully when you book the rental.

Whichever is the case in an individual rental, this insurance is likely to be very much more expensive if purchased from the car rental company than if purchased from a direct insurance provider through the Internet.

Of course you the renter are under no legal or commercial obligation to take the car rental company’s insurance. In many cases you can decline it and use your own insurance that you have purchased separately, on line or by phone thereby saving yourself a lot of money. If the car rental company has included insurance in a ‘special deal’ price where it cannot be unbundled from the rental cost, you may still need to consider alternative sources of insurance and check exactly what it covers.

In the “the special deal”, the renter may be limited in terms of its cover. It will very likely carry excess (an amount up to 1500 pounds that you would have to pay towards the costs of any accident) and exclude damage to several areas of the vehicle that are typically easily and expensively damaged even in minor accidents. It might not cover damage to tyres, wheels or the undercarriage and windows of the vehicle.

Of course, you the renter can buy additional insurance for hire cars to cover these gaps and financial exposures from the car rental company itself, however this is likely to again to be very expensive. The same type of cover can be purchased from the direct car hire excess insurance providers at significantly lower cost.

Should you be charged excess by the car rental company following an accident or for repairs to a part of the vehicle ‘excluded’ by their policy, you can them claim this back from your direct insurance. It could potentially save you a lot of money and that is most important for all of us.
